My son, Jonathan Wright Shambo was diagnosed with an astrocytoma at the age of 17. Even though the physicians told him his life expectancy was no more than 5 years, he refused to believe them. He lived his life to the fullest; fishing, hunting, laughing and working with his hands. When told the cancer had come back the first time, Jon didn’t hesitate in consenting for his second Brain Surgery followed by Radiation Therapy at UNC Hospitals. Undaunted, Jon enjoyed every moment of his life as his 10 year anniversary as a Cancer Survivor came and went.
In the summer of 2006, we were told the cancer had reoccured for the third time. Once again, Jon didn’t hesitate to consent for his third surgery here at UNC Hospitals.
During his recovery and excellent follow up care the following many months, Jon would continue to see progress as the new North Carolina Cancer Hospital was being built.
Jonathan passed November 15, 2007 at the age of 28. He was satisfied in knowing he “beat the beast for twice as long as they said.” This is in memory of the bravest person I know and in honor of all the wonderful and caring physicians and nurses here at UNC Hospitals.
